Her songwriting for Elvis Presley and discovery and nurturing of such talent as Johnny Rivers, to her heart-breaking experience with Tanya Tucker. Many Pages were excited by the frequent showbiz interactions that were accessible and provided by a major TV network facility. Some found work within and outside of the industry. Others found their job only uncovered a depressing, even insulting Hollywood experience. For Herbie J, it was da bomb, as he found himself on the set of Family Ties, The Golden Girls and Wheel of Fortune. He helped to coordinate an affiliates' convention, two press tours, five Bob Hope specials, An All-Star Salute To President Dutch Reagan, the 1984 Democratic Presidential Debates, and the 1984 Emmy Awards. He laughed with established comedians, lunched with network suits, hob-knobbed with celebrities, stuffed envelopes - and passed out tickets to Scrabble - all for a measly $5.20 an hour.

It's an experience that he remembers in-depth - and with tongue-in-cheek - in NBC & ME: MY LIFE AS A PAGE IN A BOOK - A MOCK MEMOIR OF MY BIG '80s DAZE WITH THE PEACOCK NETWORK. With NBC & ME, Herbie J (no period after the J - and it's all explained in the book) exposes for the first time the behind-the-scenes shenanigans of his initial TV network tenure. Within these pages (every possible pun intended), Herbie J takes you - the reader - behind closed-doors, down inactive hallways, and inside TV's oldest web of intrigue (that's what they used to call television networks in the old days - webs).

NBC & ME offers the fast-track, inside-scoop, close-up-look, and behind-the-scenes peek at my wanna'-be life with the so-called Peacock network - and in the process, becomes the first book to chronicle infamous Page department of NBC (or any other network's Page division, for that matter). In doing so, NBC & ME rides the skirt-tails of past or recent hit television shows like A&E's Airline (which was really Pages on a Plane), Andy Dick's The Assistant, and, of course, Donald Trump's and NBC's very own hit reality show, The Apprentice - as well as the success of NBC's newly-christened Emmy-winning hit comedy, 30 Rock (which features the Peacock net's former Saturday Night Live star/writer Tina Fey and offers periodic appearances by a character who just so happens to be a Page).

So, if you're looking for a fun read, NBC & ME: MY LIFE AS A PAGE IN A BOOK fits the bill as, none other than, a real...uhm...page-turner.

Herbie J Pilato's other books include Bewitched Forever, The Kung Fu Book of Caine, The Kung Fu Book of Wisdom, and BearManor Media's new releases, entitled, The Bionic Book: The Six Million Dollar Man And The Bionic Woman Reconstructed, and Life Story - The Book Of Life Goes On: TV's First and Best Family Show of Challenge. Born Selar Shaik in 1924, he vaulted to stardom in his first film, a British production entitled Elephant Boy (1937). For the next decade he either starred or was featured in several finely crafted adventure films, including the fantasy favorite The Thief of Bagdad (1940) and the definitive version of Rudyard Kipling's perennially popular Jungle Book (1942). Adapting to modern western ways proved remarkably easy due to his above average intelligence and innate charm. After moving to America, the popular performer became a U.S. citizen in 1944, and did his bit for the war effort as a belly gunner, seeing action in the Pacific theater. In the post-war years Sabu's career began its inevitable decline. Fantasy and exotic adventure films were not as popular as during the war, and Hollywood studios found the dark-skinned actor difficult to cast. In the early 1950s he journeyed to Europe, appearing in a pair of Italian films and two circuses. Sabu next made a triumphant return to his homeland where he acted in one film and tested for another. Returning to America, the still young actor was seen in some minor films and one final foreign film made in Germany. After appearing in a Disney film, India's first and most enduring international movie star passed away suddenly of a heart attack in December 1963, leaving behind an exceptional legacy of memorable motion pictures and an image of radiant youthfulness.

ISBN 9781593937188

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0691/4962/2444/files/star-of-india-the-life-and-films-of-sabu-hardback_1.jpg?v=1787291861
fifties-blondes-hardback
FIFTIES BLONDES (hardback)

An illustrated look at the lives and careers of the sexiest women of the 1950s. I assume, since the autobiographies that Tom co-wrote with Robert Clarke and Paul Picerni describe those actors' childhoods, that for this book, the decision to avoid the early years was Gordon's. However, Tom does find sneaky ways to get Gordon to talk about his boyhood: He asks Gordon questions about the movies he saw as a kid, the way they were ballyhooed in England, etc. And thank goodness he does, because raconteur Gordon spins some amusing tales: risking his teenage neck by going into London's seedy Limehouse section once a week for 15 weeks to see the serial The Amazing Exploits of the Clutching Hand in the only local theater running it; trying to find ways to get into theaters showing the Karloff and Lugosi horror classics (rated "For Adults Only" in England at the time); insisting that a theater manager run Busman's Honeymoon (a.k.a., Haunted Honeymoon, 1940) with Robert Montgomery at its scheduled late-night showtime even though he and his brother Alex were the only two people in the theater, etc. He even describes the experience of attending plays starring Tod Slaughter.

Even though Gordon has been featured in several of Tom’s McFarland &
Co. interview books, I don't believe there's much duplication. Before and after Curly's health declined, there is another brother Howard brother, Shemp, who is just as much a part of the trio as Curly, and at one time there were all four in a short. Now author, Geoff Dale tells the whole life story of Shemp who was fortunate enough to work with John Wayne, W. C. Fields and Jimmy Stuart in a career that spanned many decades. There are also tributes by many different people in the entertainment industry, a list of films Shemp appeared in and a lot more. "Much More Than A Stooge: Shemp Howard" is one fans of the Stooges should add to their list of books about the famous comedy legends.
-- Gary Roen, Senior Reviewer

GEOFF DALE's Latest Shemp Podcase (4/5/2024):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9PDO1PTqpY&t=2042s

YET ANOTHER GEOFF DALE "SHEMP HOWARD" PODCAST (posted 4/12/2024):
https://www.columbusmovingpictureshow.com/podcast-1/episode/3d227c74/geoff-dale-on-shemp-howard?fbclid=IwAR0l23I000kQ3rP5-vhpPcv2pBbTgcVzDsk2L3Hgm0zObbdluwF0XRIMP4Q_aem_AZtnpSRomkA7yO-U80CQU8OqE1pYjHU2CiITx_vT0eCyAHXSrVoUYOYL6UmKFZcUObhErDf-6V-OXBtX1VjjN1yq

The Latest episode of Calling old Hollywood is here.
My guest this week is Journalist and Author Geoff Dale. Bushman is trying to come back from a tarnished image and a five-year "blacklist" after having an affair with a co-star while married. He enlists the help of a newspaper reporter, Lewis Tremayne, in order to portray himself as a changed man. The backdrop of this transformation is in Italy, where Bushman has begun work on the filming of Ben-Hur. The biggest challenge in revamping Bushman's image is the fact that Bushman has no intention of changing, and the job is complicated even further when Tremayne falls for Bushman's latest fling.

This is a fascinating look into the life of Francis X. Bushman, who played Messala in the 1925 silent film Ben-Hur, and the controversies surrounding the movie while it was filming in Italy. The author does a great job of portraying the flamboyant Bushman, whose selfish, partying ways did not sit well with American viewers in those days. The novel is written from the perspective of the reporter, Tremayne, and this viewpoint serves the novel well as we see all of Bushman's faults and hypocrisies, as well as the cutthroat nature of Hollywood studios at that time. But the novel goes much deeper: Early 20th-century Italian politics, Hollywood politics, and criminal conspiracies are also involved, and the way Tremayne finds himself in the middle of everything is intriguing. The meaning of the title, Cast Aside, is shown in many ways, which will be interesting for the reader to discover. The novel is well written and recommended to fans of historical fiction about filmmaking, Mussolini's Italy, and Hollywood.

Bonnie DeMoss

From the November 2024 edition of Historical Novels Review

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0691/4962/2444/files/cast-aside---with-bushman-at-the-unmaking-of-ben-hur-in-italy-hardback_1.jpg?v=1787291873
the-novelizers-hardback
The Novelizers (hardback)

The Novelizers

An Affectionate History of Media Adaptations & Originals, Their Astonishing Authors — and the Art of the Craft

by David Spencer

474 pages

7x10 size

ISBN 9798887711799

BEAR MANOR MEDIA is proud to present

THE NOVELIZERS by David Spencer

…which examines a rich literary category in a manner not merely for fans of media tie-in writing, but for new explorers, seasoned professionals…and even open-minded cynics.

Advance praise from New York Times and internationally bestselling authors Lee Goldberg, Alan Dean Foster, Steven Savile and James Reasoner has already hailed it as “definitive”…“a milestone”…”an eye-opener”…“a genuine treasure”—plus “well-written, packed with information, and above all entertaining.”

Intertwined with its comprehensive history, reaching back to the silent movie era, THE NOVELIZERS is also a deep dive into the craft of adaptive and borrowed-universe storytelling.

Aspiring and veteran writers seeking new insight will find it no less revelatory than the aficionado peering behind the curtain of the creative process.

As you drink in the history and the craft, you’ll also meet the people for whom the book is named—many of them profiled here for the first time anywhere—and fall in love with them, via in-depth interviews and evocative, close-up portraits.

In the tradition of classic insider works about popular culture—such as William Goldman’s Adventures in the Screen Trade, Craig Zadan’s Sondheim & Co., and Marc Scott Zicree’s The Twilight Zone Companion—David Spencer’s THE NOVELIZERS resonates beyond its subject matter. With so much to choose from, how does a consumer decide what is worth seeing? And once in the audience, how can viewers evaluate what they see? These two questions inform Hammarstrom’s latest book about an entertainment he loves. The author of four previous books about the circus (including Fall of the Big Top, CH, Jul’08, 45-6054) and two about Broadway musicals, Hammarstrom is a fan of colorful public spectacles. Here, he gives the reader a combination of memoir and critique, drawing on his experiences attending circuses in the US, Russia, and China from the time he was a young boy; his many interviews with circus personnel; and his readings of various sources, including books, magazines, and even Wikipedia.

The book’s organization is idiosyncratic, with short chapters on clowns, animal acts, impresarios, and performers. Hammarstrom’s memories are vivid, and his enthusiasm is infectious. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers. – L.
